Former Barcelona forward backs Mohammed Kudus to keep starting berth

Ibrahim Afellay believes it will be unjust for Mohammed Kudus to return to the Ajax bench after his last two starts.

The former Barcelona forward has backed Mohammed Kudus to keep starting following his four goals in the last three games for the Dutch champions.

Despite being Ajax’s best player in pre-season, scoring four goals, manager Alfred Schreuder only used him as a substitute in the first five games of the season.

This irritated Mohammed Kudus, who agreed personal terms with Everton to move to the Premier League, but Ajax blocked the transfer.

Mohammed Kudus has played more minutes since the transfer window closed, starting two games in a row and being named man of the match in both.

The midfielder scored his first Champions League goal last week and added a brace as Ajax defeated Heereven 5-0 on Saturday.

“Ajax is currently lord and master in the Netherlands and above all its biggest opponent,” Afellay is quoted as saying on Studio Voetbal after the game.

“It was once again enjoyable. Of course, such an early lead helps when you play against a very organized Heerenveen.

“You can’t ignore Kudus at the moment. He played a great game against Glasgow. You can say: I can also play this position, but I think it is strong that he indicates that he is not a striker,” he added.

His excellent scoring form is also great news for the Black Stars ahead of their games against Brazil and Nicaragua later this month.

Kudus is part of Otto Addo’s 29-man squad for the pre-World Cup games.
