What has happened to Ghanaian men and women today that everything should be done for them by politicians. Let me make this clear and state this emphatically that anybody who depends on politicians for survival will never survive, you will continue to be poor.”

The MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has described Ghanaians as “irresponsible and inconsiderate” because they always want to depend on politicians for their livelihood.

“They [Ghanaians] are so irresponsible and inconsiderate,” the maverick politician said on The Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (22 February).

According to him, most politicians have become corrupt because of the undue pressure on them by the ordinary Ghanaian to provide for their needs.

“Ghanaians make politicians corrupt because of their irresponsible behavior,” Agyapong told Kwaku Nhyira-Addo, adding, “they are very demanding when they meet politicians on the streets.”

Lazy approach
“I pay school fees and electricity bills… I don’t have a problem sponsoring good students to further their education, genuine hospital bills worth GHC52,000 I pay, and in hard conditions I’m always there to help, but people who send me messages that ‘today myself and my kids we don’t even have food to eat,’ you are lazy,” the vociferous lawmaker said.

“What has happened to Ghanaian men and women today that everything should be done for them by politicians. Let me make this clear and state this emphatically that anybody who depends on politicians for survival will never survive, you will continue to be poor.”

Expanding the workforce
Agyapong advised the government to invest more in the tourism sector as part of moves to create jobs.

“If we want to develop this country, we have to stop depending on cocoa, gold and minerals. Tourism is the way to move this country [forward],” he suggested.

“Check the number of tourist sites in the country, if I’m the president today, firstly, from Independence Square to Kwame Nkrumah Museum I will provide clean beaches for tourists.

“I will not allow anybody and if we catch people easing themselves at the beach we will lash them. If you give Elmina and Cape Coast castles to me, you will see the money I will make out of it,” Agyapong added.
