Wesley Girls Religious Impasse: Akufo-Addo To Finally Speak On Thursday

0

The President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will address the nation on Thursday on a number of issues including the ongoing religious impasse involving the Wesley Girls Senior High School’s refusal to allow a Muslim student to fast during Ramadan.

Wesley Girls Senior High was in the news last month over its policy which sought to stop Muslim Students from fasting during the holy month of Ramadan as well as a ban on the wearing of hijab while in the school.

The Head mistress of the school ordered all senior house mistresses to ensure that no Muslim student is allowed to fast. According to the policy, any student found to be fasting during the ongoing Ramadan period could be withdrawn from the school or suspended for a period.

With the month of Ramadan set to end on Thursday May 13, President AKufo-Addo will intervene in the matter which has attracted comments from the Muslim caucus in parliament, top muslim clerics as well as the Ghana Education Service.
Muslims and Christians in Ghana have coexisted peacefully by respecting each other’s values and religious beliefs hence the President’s interest in settling the matter amicably.

The President is expected to call on all parties to exercise restraint and reiterate the need to maintain the peace and harmony that the nation has enjoyed over the years.

There have also been calls for religious tolerance within Ghana’s public institutions especially in schools.
