In a court order document sighted by the News On Ghana team, the High Court has given an order for the planned ‘Fix The Country Now’ demonstrations to be stopped.
The restraining order follows an affidavit filed by the police against the conveners of the protest march pursuant to Section 1 (6) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), the police said in a March 6 statement.
Some youth took to social media to demand good governance from leadership of the country . The campaign went far and wide topping trends across the globe and making headlines. Leaders of the campaign planned to incorporate a street protest, slated for May 9, but the police declined to give them protection, citing Covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings. The police proceeded to the court to get an order to stop it.
The order comes a few hours after a meeting between the conveners of the protest and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and other ministers of state.
“The High Court, presided by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, has issued a Restraining Order against conveners of a protest march labelled in part or in whole as “FixTheCountry” from embarking on their planned demonstration slated for Sunday, 9th May 2021, or any other date until the restriction on public gathering is lifted. Please read more from the attached”, a statement from the police reads in parts.
