Giving birth after 30 increases your risk of getting breast cancer – Oncologist

Naomi Oyoe Ohene Oti, Oncology Nurse Specialist, has disclosed that women stand a high chance of suffering breast cancer when they give birth after 30 years.

Speaking to Eunice Tornyi on the Breast Care Chat on e.tv Ghana she said, “It’s more hormonal so when ladies give birth early, the whole idea is to make the body rest between pregnancy and breastfeeding and there is also the hormones at birth called estrogen and progesterone. After 30, the whole idea is that you will be exposed to a lot of the hormones.”

She explained that before menstruation, the hormones rise with women developing enlarged breasts and shrinking afterwards. This on and off system is said to bring some changes and abnormalities and may trigger change in cells.

“So, when you start giving birth early these hormones are at bay. However there are still some women who give birth early and get breast cancer these are just some of the risk factors associated with it,” she emphasized.

Naomi noted that this doesn’t mean women giving birth before 30 will not risk suffering breast cancer.

“There could also be other factors that could cause a lady to get breast cancer so we should all get tested,” she advised.
