The ‎Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII believes the recent power outages in the country may last longer than expected if measures are not devised to resolve the challenges bedeviling the energy sector.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has published a schedule for planned power outages in parts of the Greater Accra Region from 10th May to 17th May 2021.

Nana Amoasi however believes the power outages may be extended beyond the stipulated time.

“The truth is we have a transmission system that is weak and a distribution system that is weak. The integrity of the transmission is always in question because for so many years we have failed as a country to reinforce the very vehicle that conveys power from our generators to consumers.

“We know that for a long time they have been shedding power and they only want to rehearse the situation and look at how it would play out. I am sure that after the end of the exercise, we will still have dumsor around,” he explained.

Nana Amoasi indicated that the power outages would linger until inefficiencies in the energy sector are resolved.

“Until we stop the leakages and we have enough money to retool the system and revamp the system, we will continue to have dumsor.”

Power will be interrupted between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm, as well as 6:00 pm and 6:00 am in more than forty communities, segregated into four groups, from 10th May to 17th May 2021.

The outage will be experienced by two alternating groups each day until the end of the exercise.

Some of the areas to be affected include Awoshie, Nsakina, Dansoman, Ashalaja, Tuba, Abossey Okai, Dansoman, Tuba, Pokuase ACP Estates, Amasaman, Taifa, Ofankor, Kokrobite, Fadama, Israel and Abeka market.
