Akuapem North: Dokua’s supporters boycott NPP polls; head for court

Some aggrieved members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akuapem North Constituency of the Eastern Region have boycotted the ongoing polling station executives and Electoral Area Coordinators election over what they describe as national Security interference and widespread manipulation.

Addressing the media, the disgruntled members, mostly supporters of the incumbent Member of Parliament ,Nana Ama Asiamah Dokua, alleged that the election has been fraught with widespread irregularities and machinations violating the spirit of free and fair election.

The constituency Youth organizer Owusu Afriyie asserted that some members of the party who are not qualified to contest the election by virtue of the fact that they breached the party’s constitution by campaigning for an independent candidate in previous election .

He also alleged that some candidates with fake nomination forms who were never vetted have been allowed to contest the election despite protest.

The constituency Youth Organizer also claimed that there has been deployment of national security operatives and military personnel to the constituency intimidating members of the party perceived to be close allies of the incumbent MP Nana Asiamah Dokua.

The disgruntled members on Friday run to the Koforidua High Court praying the court to injunct the election.

Their lawyers filed the application on Friday to stop the party from continuing with the polling station executives and electoral area coordinators election.

The Chief Executive Officer of National Lottery Authority (NLA) Sammy Awuku, the national organizer of the ruling NPP is said to have intentions to contest the parliamentary primaries in Akuapem North Constituency.

The disgruntled members of the party  therefore believe some national Executives of the party are manipulating the electoral process to his favour.

Supporters of the MP say this is unfair and undemocratic to say the least.

They said the MP has sacrificed greatly for the party to a point that four days after delivering a baby abroad she had to fly back to Ghana just to take part in election of speaker of Parliament and other parliamentary activities in favour of government.

The polling station executives and electoral area coordinators election of the NPP have been marred by denial of nomination forms to aspirants, confusion and court injunctions in many constituencies in the Eastern region.
