The Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Kwaku Ampretwum-Sarpong has disputed claims that the government is unable to facilitate the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals stranded in Ukraine due to financial constraints.

He said the government has so far released an amount of $2 million for the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals.

“Somewhere along the line, it came out that because of e-levy, the government says there is no money for the evacuation exercise. That is never true. The e-levy has not been passed but I can say that the government has released money [for evacuation of Ghanaians in Ukraine]. The first tranche of money that has been released to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to undertake this evacuation exercise is $2 million, so we are on course.”

Ghana’s Foreign Ministry puts the figure of Ghanaian students in Ukraine who have fled the country and wish to return home at more than 500.

Already, almost 50 students have been evacuated to Ghana since Russia invaded Ukraine.

For Ghanaian students eager to continue their studies, the Hungarian government has offered them the option of selecting universities in the country,

“The government of Hungary has agreed to take those who will be prepared to transfer to universities or to continue education in Hungary, and they are prepared to match whatever facilities and whatever financial obligations being paid in Hungary, so there is a window of opportunity that all is not lost,” Mr. Ampretwum-Sarpong had earlier stated.

The Deputy Minister said the government of Ghana had also reached an agreement with the Russian government to allow for the safe passage of Ghanaians, particularly students, who are in the concentrated zones of the ongoing war.
